About the Show

Toronto's Artery is a fourth-year journalism capstone project from Toronto Metropolitan University. This project includes a podcast, interactive map, transcriptions, and the website you're viewing this on.

As a piece of journalism, the podcast focuses on questioning the boundary between art and vandalism. This is done by having open and honest conversations with different types of artists. The podcast also focuses on having artists discuss what their creations mean and the overall importance of art in the community.

Asha Swann is a fourth-year journalism student and a life-long lover of art. She distinctly remembers visiting Toronto for the first time in grade eight, where she was immediately greeted with the creativity of Kensington Market. She hopes that this project will allow listeners to consider that art is essential to freedom of expression and comes in many forms. She is less concerned with the labels of graffiti, street art, murals, or public art, and more focused on how communities can thrive through a shared connection of art.

As a journalist, her writing surrounds the ideas of identity and culture. You can check out her full writing portfolio on her website.
